The Jeep Patriot Backing Plate is a metal plate that is located behind the disc brake rotor. Further, this plate prevents splash, road debris, and corrosive brake dust from damaging the brakes. By blocking the rotor area, the Backing Plate reduces the potential of contaminants causing corrosion or binding that could hinder braking response. It also prevents dust from settling on suspension parts and staining or etching alloy or chrome wheels. If the rust or rots the Backing Plate, brakes are exposed to salt and debris, and this can cause seized components and unsafe performance. Normally, the Backing Plate is unbolted after the rotor and hub have already been removed. Some vehicles require axle shaft removal in order to get to it. - Q: How to install the Backing Plate on Jeep Patriot?A:To install the backing plate, first, the hub and bearing are assembled through support plate before the rear of the assembly can be fitted with spacer Proceed to fit hub and bearing, support plate and spacer as an assembly on the trailing link. Use new mounting bolts, or clean and apply Mopar(R) Stud & Bearing Mount Adhesive or equivalent to the threads of the original mounting bolts before reuse. Firmly attach the hub and bearing, support plate and spacer to the trailing link using four bolts tightened to 105 Nm (77 ft. lbs.). Place the parking brake cable into its mounting hole in the brake support plate and push the cable housing in until the fingers lock. If your vehicle has a wheel speed sensor, install the wheel speed sensor head to the rear of the hub and bearing and tighten the mounting screw to 10 Nm (89 in. lbs.). Attach the wheel cylinder to the brake support plate and tighten the mounting screws to 13 Nm (115 in. lbs). Securely attach the brake tube to the wheel cylinder and tighten the tube nut to a torque of 17 Nm (150 in. lbs). Apply Mopar® Brake Lubricant or equivalent lubricant on the support plate and anchor shoe contact areas. Prior to the installation, examine the brake shoes. Install the drum brake shoes and drum as needed and adjust. Mount and install tire and wheel assembly. Tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Carefully turn the rear wheel to ensure that the brake drum lightly drags on the shoes; lower the vehicle and remove the brake pedal holding tool. Should you require bleeding of the affected wheel cylinder, do so and then road-test the vehicle.

Next, raise and support the vehicle, then remove the three wheel mounting nuts followed by the tire and wheel assembly. Access and remove the six drum brake shoes from the support plate. Position a 10 mm box wrench over the retainer fingers on the end of the parking brake cable housing, compress the retaining fingers with the wrench, and pull the cable housing out of the support plate. Disconnect the brake tube at the wheel cylinder and remove the wheel cylinder attaching screws. Take out the wheel cylinder from the support plate. If a wheel speed sensor is present, remove the screw fastening the sensor head in the rear of the hub and bearing and take the sensor head out. Finally, remove the four bolts securing the hub and bearing, support plate, and spacer to the trailing link, then take the hub and bearing, support plate, and spacer out as an assembly from the trailing link, separating the spacer and hub and bearing from the support plate once removed.
