Brake Master Cylinder is the component of Jeep Patriot vehicles' braking system which, through the mechanical correlation of the driver's foot depression, generates hydraulic pressure, which work the brake system slave cylinder. This mechanism work through expanding the hydraulic fluid at the base of calipers or drum brakes to make sufficient friction to stop the vehicle. Jeep Patriot models usually come with dual circuit master cylinders, which means that even if one of the circuits is not working properly, there is the other which can bring about the braking. The Brake Master Cylinder can be of different construction, some of them have been fitted with an integral type fluid reservoir while others have an external fluid reservoir made of nylon or plastic. These variations may influence maintenance and possible leakage, as outer tanks are susceptible to cracking of the reservoirs.

Jeep Patriot Brake Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to install a Brake Master Cylinder on Jeep Patriot?
    A:
Before installing the brake master cylinder, bench bleed it first. Wipe the master cylinder's connecting surface on the booster, so there is no dirt or cleaner inside the booster. Put a fresh vacuum seal on the mounting flange of the master cylinder; if the old seal is not new, unmount the old one and fit the new seal well into the groove. If the booster push rod won't go in smoothly, take out the master cylinder push rod and aim it properly before starting the insertion again. Make sure the master cylinder mounting holes match those in the power Brake Booster and the piston push rod is set correctly, then move the master cylinder up against the booster. Screw in two new master cylinder mounting nuts and tighten them with a torque wrench to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). With new vehicles and manual transaxles, cut the center of the "V" groove (2) on the hydraulic unit to clear the way for hydraulic clutch fluid (1) and remove the cut plug (3). Wedge the clutch actuator hose (2) into the reservoir port (1) and hold it in place using a hose clamp. Guide the (1) primary tube and the (2) secondary tube through the master cylinder, push the tube nuts until firm and link the (1) connector on the wiring harness to the (2) level switch. You should place a reservoir blocker (1) on the fluid reservoir (2) to keep the fire hazard under control; remove the blocker from the original reservoir (3) if it's absent and surround the reservoir's neck with the blocker, close it and snap its retaining tab securely. Replace the ground cable on the battery and top up the master cylinder reservoir. Make sure the brake pedal feels firm before using the vehicle; however, if it's soft, you need to bleed the hydraulic system and check for leaks. Always test the vehicle on the road to ensure both brakes are working as expected.
  • Q: How to Safely Remove a Brake Master Cylinder on Jeep Patriot?
    A:
You need to pump down the vacuum in the power Brake Booster before removing the brake master cylinder, pump the brake pedal with the engine off until it feels sturdy. Remove the negative ground wire from the battery and put it aside. After that, pull the wiring harness connector from the brake fluid level switch in the brake master cylinder reservoir. Outside the brake master cylinder, pull out the primary and secondary brake tubes and then place a plug to secure both openings. If you have a manual transaxle, take off the clamp and pull the clutch actuator hose off the reservoir port. Wipe the section around the brake master cylinder attachment to the power brake booster with brake cleaner. Afterward, get rid of the two nuts holding the brake master cylinder to the power brake booster and straighten it out as you pull it out.
