A Jeep Wrangler catalytic converter helps in the emission control system of the car with the help of which it reduces the emission of gases like carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and helps in converting them into harmless gases like water and carbon dioxide (CO2). It is done through a chemical process involving the use of several catalysts which mostly include platinum, palladium and rhodium which are placed in honeycomb like structure. For many years catalytic converters that have been fitted into Jeep Wrangler cars have been the two-way and three-way systems. The latter has been developed in early 1980s, which not only oxidizes CO and HC, but also reduces the NOx emission. - Q: How to Safely Remove a Catalytic Converter from a 3.8L Engine on Jeep Wrangler?A:In case of a 3.8L engine to remove the catalytic converter we have to lift and support the car. Inject the bolts and nuts with heat valve penetrating lubricant and give 5 minutes. Completely unplug all the Oxygen Sensors electric connections, and take out the transmission crossmember. Then, unbolt the nuts of the front Exhaust Pipe and catalytic converter composition to the flange of muffler, remove the bolts and flanged nuts at the manifold. Support lower the front exhaust pipe/ catalytic converter assembly and push it out of the mount at the transmission, should there be one, and remove the assembly out of the car.
- Q: How to Install a Catalytic Converter on a 3.8L Engine on Jeep Wrangler?A:For a 3.8L engine, put the front Exhaust Pipe and catalytic converter together and position both in the mount by the transmission (if selected). Slide the nuts onto the front exhaust pipe and the catalytic converter assembly, but don't secure them before you finish connecting everything. The distance from the exhaust to the frame and parts below should always be at least 25.4 mm (1.0 in.). Tighten the bolt at the exhaust manifold to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) and then tighten the front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter assembly to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) on the muffler flange nuts. Put the front pipe in place on the manifold flange, then clamp it down with 10 Nm (89 in. lbs.) of torque. Attach the electrical connectors of the Oxygen Sensor and place the transmission crossmember into the car. Drop the vehicle to the ground, crank it and check for exhaust leaks, fixing any problems as you find them. Lastly, ensure there's no contact between the exhaust system and the car's body panels and make changes where needed.
