2000 Chrysler LHS Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2000 Chrysler LHS?
A: To service or repair the power steering pump, remove the ground cable from the shock tower by taking off the battery ground cable and set the isolator to keep it safe. Avoid losing a lot of power steering fluid by using a siphon pump to get all the fluid out of the reservoir. Lift the automobile and take off the power steering fluid tube at the pump so fluid drains from both the supply and reservoir. Shut the open nipple on the reservoir so no more fluid escapes and then take the pressure hose off the pump and let any leftover fluid seep out. Slacken the nut on the front of the drive belt tensioner pulley with a flathead screwdriver and use the adjustment bolt to take tension off of the belt, before you remove the belt from the pump pulley. Reach in through the breathing holes on the pulley and remove the three bolts that join the power steering pump to the bracket. After assembly, the whole pump and pulley set can be unmounted from underneath the engine, between the radiator lower support and the cradle. Take out the important parts from the old pump and use them in the replacement one. For installation, Loosely screw the three mounting bolts into place while holding the pump in the mounting bracket, then tighten them to a torque of 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Put the drive belt on the pump pulley and make certain the lock-nut on the tensioner is properly tightened. Secure the smaller side of the pressure hose to the pump, using 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) of torque and make sure the hose clamp on the supply hose rests beyond the upset bead on the reservoir nipple. Raise the car off the ground, reconnect the battery ground cable to the ground stud by the strut tower and lower it. It is important to use just Mopar Power Steering Fluid, not automatic transmission fluid. The final step is to use the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation procedure to fill the power steering system and remove any air bubbles.
