Chrysler LHS Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on Chrysler LHS?
    A:
Disconnect the battery ground cable from the stud on the shock tower and securely tie it with an isolating cable to begin working on the pump. To prevent losing power steering fluid, drain it out into a container using a siphon pump to stop it from spilling. Lift up the vehicle so you can free the power steering supply hose from the pump and drain the fluid out of both the pump and the reservoir. Put a cap over the nipple of the reservoir so it won't leak, then remove the hose from the pressure fitting and drain any excess fluid. Slacken the front pulley's tensioner nut, pull on the adjustment bolt to loosen the Drive Belt and take the belt from around the pump pulley. Pass the wrench through the holes on the pulley to get to the bolts holding the pump and remove all three of them. After installing the turbine, the pump and pulley assembly can be taken out from beneath the engine, through the space between the radiator lower support and the cradle. Set up the pump's new parts by attaching them to the replace pump, then set the new pump into place in the mounting bracket in the same order it came out, making sure it's secure by only tightening the three bolts very lightly to a torque of 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.) Clean the drive belt and strap it on the pump pulley. Then, carefully fit the lock-nut on the tensioner pulley and tighten it. Place the power steering pressure hose onto the pump's pressure connector, fasten the tube nut up to 47 Nm of torque (35 ft. lbs.) and match your power steering fluid hose to the supply fitting, ensuring the hose clamp is placed above the upset bead on the reservoir nipple. Pull the vehicle towards the floor, then attach the battery ground cable back to the strut tower's ground stud. Mopar Power Steering Fluid or an equal replacement should be used and automatic transmission fluid should be avoided. After that, execute the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation process to restore fluid and release air from the steering system.
