2000 Dodge Caravan Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix Brake Pads on 2000 Dodge Caravan?
A: Before fixing or replacing front brake pads, lift the car and unbolt both the front wheel and tire assemblies. Start from one side, remove the 2 caliper to steering knuckle guide pin bolts and take the caliper off the steering knuckle by holding the bolted end and rotating the opposite end so it slips over the machined abutment. Stop the caliper from moving onto the brake fluid hose by hanging a wire from the front strut assembly. After that, pull up on the retaining clip at the top of the brake shoe until the clip is over the caliper design and slide the shoe out. Pull the inner brake shoe from the caliper piston far enough to release the clip. Do the same thing on the opposite side of the show. Retract the caliper piston into its bore, remove any paper protection from both the gaskets and press the new inboard shoe onto the piston with its clip. Slide the brake shoe on the outboard side of the brake caliper and spray the Mopar (R) Multipurpose grease on the steering knuckle abutment bearings where they contact the caliper. Place the brake caliper and shoes on the rotor so that the guide pin bolts, bushings and sleeves do not hit the steering knuckle bosses. Attach the caliper guide pin bolts and tighten each one to 22 Nm (195 inch lbs.), those threads carefully to prevent damage. lock the wheel onto the car and use a torque generator to ensure the screws are secured in the proper pattern halfway, then do them fully to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Take the same steps on the other side, lower the vehicle, inspect and adjust the brake fluid level and keep pressing the brake pedal a few times to confirm responsibility before you drive the vehicle.
