2000 Dodge Caravan Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Front Brake Caliper on 2000 Dodge Caravan?
A: To work on the front brake caliper, slowly push your foot down on the brake pedal to the first inch, use a brake pedal depressor to keep it pressed and block fluid flow from the master cylinder to the reservoir. Lift up the vehicle and then remove the front wheel and tire grouping. Then, work on removing the banjo bolt that connects the brake hose to the brake caliper and throw out the two washers it brings off. After removing the guide pin bolts, swing the free end of the caliper away and slide the other end out below the machined abutment on the steering knuckle. While installing, first slide the caliper piston back all the way into its bore and grease the steering knuckle abutments with Mopar Multipurpose Lubricant. Set the brake caliper and shoes onto the brake rotor, so that all guide pin bolts, bushings and sleeves are no longer in contact with the steering knuckle bosses. Then install and tighten the guide pin bolts up to 22 Nm (195 inch lbs.) while avoiding crossing threads. After installing a new special washer on each side of the hose connection, push the banjo bolt through and tighten with 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) of torque. After putting the wheel and tire on, tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts in the correct way first to halfway and then fully tighten them to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). After the vehicle is lowered, unmaintain pressure at the brake pedal with the tool, bleed the brakes into the calipers, take the vehicle out for a road test including several stops to break in and level the brake linings.
