2000 Dodge Caravan Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Front Parking Brake Cable on 2000 Dodge Caravan?
A: The first step in servicing and repairing the front parking brake cable is to lift the vehicle onto jackstands or a hoist. Release the tension from the automatic feature of the parking brake lever by hand. Eliminate the intermediate and left rear park brake cable from the park brake cable equalizer. Pull the front park cable housing retainer away from the body outrigger bracket by pushing the retaining fingers inwards with a 14 mm box wrench or you can use an aircraft type hose clamp and screwdriver instead. Lift the car by jack stand and take out the molding and panel under the left front door to reach the park brake cable and pedal. Take out the floor mat and look for the park brake cable and seat cover, then carefully pull both from inside the floorpan. Remove the parking brake button from the clevis by pulling on the strand and tapping the cable housing end away from the pedal brace. Eject the cable retainer from the bracket found next to the parking brake lever and pull the cable assembly out of the vehicle using the hole in the floor pan. Install the parking brake by bringing the parking brake cable assembly out of the vehicle, putting it through the hole in the floor and linking it to the lever bracket. Fit the retainer across the park brake cable and into the pedal assembly bracket, then attach the cable end to the retainer. Turn the cable button up into the park brake pedal clevis, set the seal flange flush with the floor pan and fold the carpet over. After lifting the vehicle, pass the brake cable and its housing into the outrigger bracket on the body, so the housing retainer keeps it in position. Set the tension on the automatic setup of the parking brake lever by hand, put the system cables back onto the brake equalizer, lower the vehicle and press the brake pedal once to set the brake cables in place.
