2001 Dodge Dakota Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Axle Shaft on 2001 Dodge Dakota?
A: Start by removing the lug nuts and the hub nut from the tires after treating the vehicle to a flat surface with its brakes applied. Undo the cotter pin, nut lock and spring washer from the stub shaft and afterward remove the hub nut and washer. After that, undo the wheel and tire and take off the brake caliper and rotor. If you have the equipment, separate the ABS wheel speed sensor from the sensor mount and unscrew the bolts holding the hub bearing to the knuckle. After that, take out the hub bearing from both the axle driveshaft and the steering knuckle. Put two adjustable pry bars between the inner C/V joint and the axle shaft just under the rotating axle and apply pressure so that the inner C/V inner ring is free from the axle shaft internal piece. After taking out the driveshaft, put the deer knuckle's hub bearing bore over the CV drive shaft stub and cover the splines of the drive shaft with wheel bearing grease. Insert the inner C/V joint on the axle flange, forcing it home so the axle shaft snap-ring snaps into position in the housing. Remove any dirt from the hub bearing bore, the hub bearing end of the driveshaft and the steering knuckle surface and applying a thin layer of grease to all joining parts before fitting the hub bearing to the axle drive shaft and steering knuckle. Bolt the hub bearing onto the steering knuckle, clear any debris from the stub shaft threads and place the hub nut and its washer on the back of the shaft. Afterward, replace the ABS wheel speed sensor, the brake caliper and the brake rotor if necessary. Brakes should be applied and then you tighten the hub nut to 244 Nm (180 ft. lbs.), install the spring washer, nut lock and cotter pin on the stub shaft. Should you have a skid plate, fit it, then reattach the wheel and the tire.
