2000 Dodge Dakota Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2000 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before you can work on the rack and pinion, raise the vehicle, remove the nuts from the tie rod ends and use Puller C-3894-A to part the tie rod ends from the knuckles. Then, cut the power steering lines from the rack and pinion, take out the lower coupler bolt and slip the coupler off the rack and pinion. When that is done, pull out the bolts connecting the rack and pinion to the front crossmember and lift out the rack and pinion. Make sure to check the bushings before fitting the new equipment and swap out any that need it. Place the rack and pinion onto the front crossmember and fasten the bolts with 258 Nm (190 ft. lbs.) of force. Slide the shaft coupler over the rack and pinion, place a new bolt in the shaft and tighten it to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Clean the ends of the tie rod studs and the tapers on the knuckles and then join the tie rod ends to the knuckles, keeping the nuts at 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.). Secure the power steering lines to the rack and pinion, take off the support and drop the car. Fill the tank with fluid, turn on the Power Steering Pump and after that, check and adjust the toe position during the Workshop Initial Operation.
