2001 Dodge Dakota Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2001 Dodge Dakota?
A: For serving and repairing the rack and pinion, raise and support the vehicle, take out the tie rod end nuts and use puller C-3894-A to divide the tie rod ends from the knuckles. After that, separate the power steering lines from the rack and pinion, take out the lower coupler bolt and glide the coupler away from the rack and pinion. When this is done, take out the bolts holding the rack and pinion to the front crossmember and then remove the bolts at the rear. Check the bushings on the new rack and pinion before installing and change those that appear to be worn or broken. Snap the rack and pinion onto the front crossmember and tighten its bolts to 258 Nm (190 ft. lbs.). Place the shaft coupler over the rack and pinion shaft, fix a new bolt in place and tighten it to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Clean the ends of the tie rod studs and the inside of the knuckle tapers, then put the new tie rod ends in place and secure them with nuts turned to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.). Attach the power steering lines to the rack and pinion, take out the support and then lower the vehicle. Pour liquid into the system and then modify the toe position.
