What Precautions Should Be Taken Before Servicing the Steering Wheel on 2000 Dodge Dakota?

Since an air bag deploying for any reason could cause harm, you first have to disable the air bag before you start servicing the steering column. Proper steering column operation depends on all fasteners being torqued as directed in the specs. Place the car's front wheels straight in front of it and disconnect the negative (ground) cable from the battery. After the air bag, take out the steering wheel by connecting the puller bolts to the steering wheel rather than to the Clock Spring, so there is no risk of damage. With the steering wheel in place, tighten the nut to 47 Nm (36 ft. lbs.) and put in the air bag and finally reattach the battery ground (negative) cable. Then, check the transmission linkage movement and modify it according to the proper procedure, if needed.
