- Q: How to Safely and Effectively Service a Muffler on 2000 Dodge Durango?A: Should you need to light a torch while servicing your muffler, put on safety goggles and don't allow torch flames to get near the fuel lines. Remove all oxygen sensor connectors to safeguard their wires and the connectors. To begin, take out the battery negative lead and raise the car on a hoist. Undo the clamps bonding the muffler to the exhaust pipe/catalytic converter and tailpipe and untie the tailpipe from the hooks holding it up. Twist the tailpipe out of the muffler by first heating the joint with an oxygen/acetylene torch. Release the muffler from the isolators, warm the point where it joins the exhaust pipe/catalytic converter and twist it as slowly as you can to loosen it. During installation, put the muffler on the exhaust pipe/catalytic converter and tailpipe, holding the exhaust clamps together and relocking the nuts manually. Secure the muffler to the hanger on the rear and join the tailpipe into the same mounting. Place the muffler correctly and tighten the exhaust clamp nuts to 42 Nm (31 ft. lbs.). After that, lower the vehicle, connect the battery negative cable, start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
