2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the wheel bearing on 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: Take out the wheel, tire, brake drum and axle shaft in that order to start servicing the axle bearing. With Socket DD-1241JD, unscrew the lock wedge and adjustment nut and remove the hub assembly which will let the outer axle bearing slide out. Throw away the grease seal inside the hub and then use Installer 5064 and Handle C-4171 to push out the inner axle bearing and grease seal from the hub. Tap gently out the bearing cups from their place inside the hub bore, removing them with a brass drift or suitable tool. Clean the axle bearings and inside of the hub with a suitable cleaner before you insert the bearing cups with the Help Installer and the enclosed Handling Tool C-4171. First, use a bit of lubricant on the bearing cup and then slide the inner axle bearing into the hub. Secure a new set of bearing grease seals onto the shaft using Installer 8149 and Handle C-4171, before checking the bearing's and seal's contact surfaces in the axle tube spindle for unevenness and fixing those areas. Take care as you apply multi-purpose NLGI, grade 2, EP-type lubricant that you do not allow the bearing grease seal to make contact with the tube spindle threads on the axle while installing the unit. Slide the hub onto the axle, set the outer axle bearing in place and install the nut for the hub bearing adjustment, using Socket DD-1241D. Turn the adjustment nut to between 163 and 190 (120 - 140) ft. lbs. as you rotate the wheel, then loosen it 1/8 of a turn to reach 0.001 to 0.010 inch of bearing end play. First, set the locking wedge into the spindle keyway and adjustment nut while making sure it locks into a new place in the nut. In the end, fit the axle shaft, brake drum and wheel and tire assembly.
