2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the Wheel Bearing(s) on an 8 1/4 rear axle on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: Lift and hold the car secure with stands before removing the axle shaft from the rear axle 8 1/4. Rotate the brush around the axle shaft and then remove the axle seal with a pry bar on the end of the axle tube. Both the seal and the bearing can be removed together with the proper tool. Then, take out the axle shaft bearing using the instruments provided in Bearing Removal Tool Set 6310 and Adapter Foot 6310-9. Once on the axle, make sure to clean the tube on the axle and get rid of any previous sealer or burrs. Apply the bearing inside the axle shaft with Installer C-4198 and Handle C-4171, to ensure it presses straight and touches the tube from the outside where the part number label is visible. Use C-4076-B Installer and C-4735-1 Handle to complete the install, always ensuring the tool touches the axle tube to reach the right depth for the seal. Before putting in the axle shaft, apply a little axle lubricant to the seal lip so it is protected. After that, place the axle shaft, check and fill the gear oil, remove the support and lower your vehicle.
