2000 Dodge Ram 2500 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2000 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Before handling the power steering pump, switch off the engine, confirm the fluid level, don't use automatic transmission fluid and avoid overflowing the pump during service. Unscrew the filler cap, then look at the dipstick to see if it reads COLD when the engine fluid temperature is somewhere between 21 and 27 °C (70 and 80 °F). Tilt the steering wheel to full left, then add the pump fluid to the correct level and keep it resting for at least two minutes. Raise the front of the car off the ground and turn the steering wheel from one side to the other, without the engine running, 20 times; or for cars with oil cooler or longer return lines, turn it 40 times. Start the engine and keep the fluid proper, move down the front wheels and let it idle for about two minutes. Press the gas pedal and move the steering wheel to each side to confirm both power assist and that the pump doesn't make noise. If the liquid in the radiator looks very foamy or milky, give the vehicle a few minutes and check the fluid level again before running it for a long time with foamy liquid to prevent pump damage.
