2000 Dodge Ram 3500 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Crankshaft Seal on 2000 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: The seal on the crankshaft main bearing is a two-piece viton seal which can be fitted onto the upper bearings either with or without the crankshaft. Install a compatible new lower seal when you put in the upper seal after removing the rear main bearing cap. If removing the crankshaft, toss the upper seal, clear the rear cap surface where it meets the cylinder block and confirm no debris is in the seal groove. Dab a little engine oil on the lips of the new upper seal and place the new rear bearing oil seal with the one facing the engine. Put the crankshaft into the cylinder block, rub the new lower seal a bit with oil and insert the new lower rear bearing oil seal into the bearing cap so its white paint side is facing the rear. Place a 5 mm amount of Loctite 518 on both sides of the rear main bearing cap, not touching the rubber seal and quickly add it to the cylinder block. Use the cap slot, alignment dowel and cap bolts to align the bearing cap, but don't take out too much material or strike the rear cap more than twice. Wipe each of the cap bolts clean and apply oil, install them on the bearing caps and turn each to 115 Nm when installation is complete. Put the oil pump in place and apply Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant to the bearing cap lining for the joint. Then, ensure that a small bit of sealant comes out and wipe any extra off the seal groove on the oil pan before you fasten the pan back in place. Should the crankshaft be fitted, you should remove the oil pan and pump, the rear main bearing cap and discard the lower oil seal-slowly but carefully removing the upper one. Wipe the cylinder block mating part, apply a little oil to the new seal lip and use a glass drift or sharp center punch to loosen a minimum of two main bearing caps ahead of the back bearing cap. Set the new upper seal into the cylinder block with the providing tool, putting the white paint section toward the back. Insert the lower rear bearing oil seal, painting side to the rear, into the rear bearing cap, add a 5 mm drop of Loctite 518 on both sides and put the rear main bearing cap back on right away. Install the prepared bearing cap, use torque on the cap bolts cleaned with oil to 115 Nm torque. Advance the oil pump into place, put Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant at the bearing cap and start the pan installation quickly.
