2000 Dodge Viper Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Disassemble and Reassemble a Brake Caliper on the Front Disc on 2000 Dodge Viper?
A: Each piston in the front disc brake caliper assembly on this car must be disassembled and reassembled separately because it is a multi-piston design. Get started by dismounting the front disc brake caliper, then attach it firmly in a vise using the caliper bosses and cover the bosses with protective caps to prevent damage. If you didn't remove the brake shoes before, do so now. From there, undo the connection between the inboard and outboard halves with a brake fluid tube, making sure to use only ISO style fittings. Use a fabricated plug made of brake line tube with an ISO flare to cover up the interconnecting brake tube fitting on the inboard side. Spread a shop towel on the caliper half inside the bracket, then attach a seal installer tool or its equivalent to support the piston during C-clamp tightening, without overdoing it. Before taking out the piston, use a shop towel to protect the outside of the outboard. Use a rubber-tipped air nozzle to force air into the cylinder which will push the piston out. Make certain your hands don't touch the part near the piston's location. Should the dust boot be stuck in the caliper, gently pry it out so as not to break the bore. Alcohol should be used to clean the piston, checking for deterioration or marks; if the piston is damaged, replace it with a new one. A non-metal tool should be used to remove the piston seal from the inside caliper, then the bore should be spotlessly cleaned before inspecting for problems. First, blow out the bore on the assembly with air and then add a new piston seal, coated in brake fluid. Finally, mount a dust boot that's been coated with brake fluid as well. Be sure the piston is properly in the bore and that the dust boot fits into the counterbore. Keep repeating the cleaning and passage-tuning for the piston remaining on the inboard half side. To protect the finish on the outboard caliper half, set a shop towel over it and use a seal installation tool to fix the piston in place. Then use an air nozzle with a rubber tip to move the piston out. Ensure you clean and inspect the outboard piston and bore the same way and make sure all seals and dust boots are positioned properly. After reconditioning both disc brake halves, fit back the existing front control arms, insert the reconditioned control arms into the front disc caliper, attach the wheel and tire assembly and tighten the wheel stud nuts to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.). At the end, lower the vehicle, press the brake pedal and do a road test to adjust the brake linings on the wheel brake drum.
