2000 Dodge Viper Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain Your Brake Pads on 2000 Dodge Viper?
A: For rear brake pad service, lift the car, remove the wheel and tire and make sure the car is stable. At this point, don't push the caliper piston back into the bore, as you will require a special tool to avoid causing damage to it. Hold the anti-rattle spring steady and tap on the retaining pin for the brake pads to get it out of the caliper with a hammer and pin punch. Get rid of the brake shoe retaining pin from the caliper's assembly by removing the pin, the anti-rattle spring and make sure to check and replace the snap ring on the pin if it is corroded or harmed. Move the outboard brake shoe backward toward the engine and when it's clear of the caliper, remove it from the system. Refer to these steps to treat the other shoe, the one that faces toward the engine. If need be, take the brake rotor off. Remember to put a mark on the brake mount and the wheel mount and remove the rotor by sliding it out from the brake caliper. Rotate the caliper piston back into the bore using Spanner, Special Tool 6366, making sure the mechanism is safe while you do this. If you have removed the rotor, match up the hole with the stud and put the rotor onto the hub. Both rear disc brake shoes are the same; if new sets are installed, either shoe may be used on either side of the vehicle, but only original assemblies should be put back in their original locations. Start by fitting the inner brake shoe, then add the outer shoe and have the anti-rattle spring in place while you set the retaining pin to stop it from flying off and injuring you. Fixed the anti-rattle clip between the brake shoes and caliper assembly and then use a hammer to push the pin into the caliper until it's fully inserted. Put the wheels and tires back on and tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts first to half torque, then tighten them all the way to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.). Then, lower the car and press the brake pedal a few times to help the brake shoes move into place and make the parking brake work properly, confirming there is good brake response before you move the car. Drive the car for a few minutes, making stops now and then to wear out any dust on the brakes and properly fit the brake shoe linings.
