2000 Jeep Cherokee Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Faulty Driver Side Air Bag Module on 2000 Jeep Cherokee?
A: You must start by disconnecting and suspending the battery cable negative and if the air bag has not been set off, allow two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge. Take out the two screws connecting the driver side air bag module to the steering wheel on the vehicle's underside and then pull away the module to access the wire harness connectors on its back. Release the Clock Spring horn switch wire harness connecter from the horn switch feed wire connector and carefully separate the air bag module Clock Spring wire harness connector from the air bag module without pulling on the Clock Spring wire harness. Take out the air bag module on the steering wheel from the driver's side and if it has deployed, install a new Clock Spring. Be certain that nothing from the outside gets into the driver side air bag module or becomes stuck in the gap between the cushion and the trim during installation or it could lead to injuries for the driver. Since replacement covers are in the unit's original colors, the trim cover must not be painted at any time. Make sure you press and hear an audible sound as the Clock Spring air bag wire harness connector is joined to the air bag module connector's receptacle. After that, reattach the Clock Spring horn switch wire harness connector. Ensure that the driver side air bag is inserted into the steering wheel and all wire harnesses are not getting squeezed, then tighten the two screws to 90 in. lbs. Don't put the negative end of the battery cable back on just yet; do the air bag system diagnosis and testing before that.
