How to Replace a Faulty Passenger Side Air Bag Module on Jeep Cherokee?

If the battery has not been disconnected, do so first, then after disconnecting it, let the system capacitor discharge for two minutes if the air bags are not deployed. Since you can come in contact with irritants on the air bag module and interiors, wear eye protection, gloves and a long-sleeved shirt. Open the top cover of the instrument panel, then disconnect the wire connector labeled air bag for passengers from the top of the panel's support bar. First, disengage the retainer, then take out the four screws that hold the passenger-side air bag to the instrument panel and afterward take out the two screws securing the top bracket of the air bag to the chassis. Roll the glove box down and retrieve the four screws that keep the lower air bag door flange locked to the instrument panel. With two screws loosened, take out the lower mounting brackets for the air bag module, then detach the air bag module and its corresponding door from the dashboard. Latch the passenger side air bag door onto the air bag module, put the assembly into the instrument panel and fasten the lower brackets with screws tightened to 11.8 Nm (105 in. lbs.). Screw and secure the four fasteners for the lower flange on the air bag door to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.), then install the glove box. Tighten inside the car using two 11.8 Nm (105 in. lbs.) screws on the upper mounting brackets and use four 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.) screws on the upper flange of the air bag door. Click the wire harness connector retainer and then properly reconnect the passenger side air bag module wire harness connector. After that, attach the top cover on the instrument panel and postpone reconnecting the negative cable from the battery.

What Steps Should Be Taken with an Air Bag System Post-Collision on Jeep Cherokee?

Having a crash warrants treating the air bag system with caution. An air bag module's inflator should be kept a safe distance from sources of electricity on the back of the car. Point the trim cover or air bag side away from you when you transport a non-deployed air bag module, to avoid injury if it accidentally deploys. Set the trim cover or air bag side on top of the surface to ensure it's less likely to move about. The air bag system must always be turned off when working on the steering wheel, steering column or instrument panel so that deployment doesn't take place unexpectedly.
