2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Axle Upper Ball Joint on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before working on the upper ball joint, raise the car and keep it up with a jack, then jack up the rear axle from underneath. Disconnect the ball joint by first taking out the pushcol at the top of the arm, then separate it from the bottom nut with Remover 8278 and try striking the upper control arm with a hammer to loosen it. Then, unbolt the ball joints holding the differential housing and remove the ball joints out of the housing. Install the ball joint to the housing of the differential and tighten the mounting bolts to 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Lift the rear portion with the jack, adjust the upper arm to the ball joint, pull it down on the stud and attach a new nut, fastening it to 142 Nm (105 ft. lbs.). Take off the supports and move the vehicle to the ground.
