2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on a 186 FBI Axle on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before servicing or repairing a 186 FBI steering knuckle, take off the hub bearing and axle shaft, disconnect the tie rod or drag link from the steering knuckle arm. After that, get rid of the cotter pins from both the upper and lower ball studs and next come off the nuts on top and bottom of the ball studs. Drive the brass hammer between the steering knuckle and the ball studs to bring the knuckle loose and ready to be removed. You'll need to place the tools where they are meant to be for the simple process of replacement. After putting the knuckle back on the ball studs, tighten the bottom retaining nut to 109 Nm (80 ft. lbs.) and then install a new cotter pin. Following this, tighten the top retaining nut by 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.) and insert a new cotter pin into the valve spring adjuster. After that, put back the hub bearing and axle shaft and hook up the tie-rod or drag link end to the steering knuckle arm.
