Q: How to Remove and Install a Camshaft on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Prior to removing the camshaft, separate the negative battery cable and let out the coolant, making sure you save the usable fluid in a clean jar. After that, pull the radiator out (and condenser if you have AC) and mark the rotor's position after you detach the distributor cap. Get rid of the front fascia or grille as required, disconnect the camshaft position sensor electrical connector and then pull out the sensor. Go on to remove the engine cylinder head cover, rocker arms, bridges, pivots, push rods, engine cylinder head and gasket, hydraulic valve tappets, vibration damper, timing cover, timing chain and sprockets. After removing the two retaining screws from the thrust plate, take out the thrust plate and the camshaft. When installing the engine, check the cam lobes, bearing journals, bearings and distributor drive gear to see if there is wear and be sure to clean the oil pressure relief holes in the rear cam journal if you find excessive wear on the engine's thrust surface. When the oil is installed, be studious and install the camshaft to ensure the bearings are not damaged. Examine the wear on the thrust plate surfaces, put the plate into place and drive in the small screws, giving them 24 Nm of torque. After installing the timing chain, put the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets back in place along with their aligning marks and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt or cup washer to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). Fit the timing case cover to the engine block along with a new oil seal, plus the vibration damper, hydraulic valve tappets and lift the cylinder head gasket so the numbers on top are visible. Attach the cylinder head and head bolts according to the recommended torque and rotate part, fit the push rods, rocker arms and all pivot assemblies and fasten each one by turning them alternatingly. Attach the engine cylinder head cover, fit the oil pump gear and place the camshaft position sensor and ignition coil rail into place. After putting in the serpentine drive belt, tighten it to the measured tension and rub Mopar Engine Oil Supplement or its equivalent on the hydraulic valve tappets and valve components, along with your engine oil, until your next oil change which should happen after 1609 km (1,000 miles) at the latest. If your car has an air conditioner, attach the condenser and receiver/drier assembly and do not operate the system until the service valves are open. Next, put in the radiator, link the hoses together, top up the cooling system with the proper amount, fit the grille and fascia back on if you removed them and reconnect the negative battery cable.
