2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Camshaft on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Always start by removing the negative cable from the battery and draining the cooling system, making sure you release any pressure in the coolant. After that, get rid of the radiator and condenser when the vehicle has A/C, the engine cylinder head cover, rocker arms, bridges, pivots, push rods and the engine cylinder head and gasket. Turn the crankshaft until the marks on both sprockets are aligned and then remove the timing chain and both sprockets. Should removal of the front bumper or grille be necessary, next take out the two thrust plate retaining screws, thrust plate and camshaft. Be sure to review the journals, bearings, cam lobes and camshaft position sensor drive gear for any damage and check the debris found in the rear cam journal's oil pressure relief holes. Before installing the camshaft, use Mopar Engine Oil Supplement or an appropriate oil on its surface, set it carefully in the engine to protect the bearings, slide the thrust plate under the camshaft and use a torque wrench to tighten the retaining screws to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Grease the camshaft a second time, mount the camshaft sprocket, the crankshaft sprocket and the timing chain, applying 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.) of pressure to the camshaft sprocket bolt and washer. Give the crankshaft two complete revolutions and set the camshaft sprocket timing mark based on its reference. After that, attach the timing case cover with new oil seal, fitting the vibration damper from top to bottom, replacing the hydraulic valve tappets, connecting the cylinder head gasket, head cylinder, push rods, rocker arms and finishing with the pivot and bridge assemblies and cylinder head cover in place. When installing the serpentine drive belt, remember to put Mopar Engine Oil Supplement or an equal product on the hydraulic valve tappets and all valve parts and it should remain with the oil until the engine oil needs a change after 1000 miles. After that, fit the radiator, set the timing on the engine, fit and adjust the grille and bumper if not in place and attach the negative alligator clamp to the battery.
