Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair an Exhaust Manifold on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: To do any work on or fix the exhaust manifold, first detach the battery negative cable and remove the air cleaner inlet hose from the throttle body assembly and the air cleaner assembly. After that, unhook the throttle cable, the vehicle speed control cable (if you have it) and the transmission line pressure cable. Remove the Throttle Position Sensor, Idle Air Control Motor, Coolant Temperature Sensor at the thermostat housing, Intake Air Temperature Sensor, Oxygen Sensor, Crank Position Sensor and six Fuel Injector Connectors from their electrical connections and safely place the wiring harness so it won't interfere. Take out the vacuum supplies from the intake manifold for the Map Sensor, HVAC and Brake Booster and follow the fuel pressure release procedure. Unplug the supply line that goes to the fuel rail assembly and then weaken the tensioner to pull off the accessory drive belt. Uninstall the power steering pump and its bracket from the intake manifold and keep them nearby. Raise the vehicle, unhook the exhaust pipes from the engine manifolds and then bring the vehicle down so the intake and engine exhaust manifolds come out. Once you get a new manifold, put all your fittings onto it, then lay a new exhaust/intake manifold gasket with its alignment dowels over the cylinder head. Set the exhaust manifolds in positions attached to the cylinder head, put fastener Number 3 in place and tighten it by hand and finally mount the intake manifold on the cylinder head dowels. Install Numbers 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11 and then 6 and 7. Tighten the screws one after another up to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.) for Nos. 1 through 5, 31 Nm (23 in. lbs.) for Nos. 6 and 7 and 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.) for Nos. 8 through 11. After testing the pump, install it and the bracket to the intake manifold, make sure the belt is tightened according to the guideline. Attach the fuel system supply line to the fuel rail assembly and check if the O-rings need replacement. Attach all the electrical connections on the intake manifold and put in the throttle cable, vehicle speed control cable (if present) and transmission line pressure cable (also if present). Attach the air cleaner assembly to place it over the throttle body and connect the inlet hose to the throttle body assembly. Edge the car up again to attach the pipes to the engine exhausts, fastening them with bolts set at 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.), then lift the car back to the ground and hook up the battery negative again. Lastly, power up the engine and carefully look for any leaks.
