Q: How to Service an Exhaust Manifold on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Begin the service of the exhaust manifold by cutting off the battery's negative cable first, then remove the air cleaner inlet hose from both the resonator assembly and air cleaner assembly. Then, take off the throttle cable, car speed control cable (if you have one) and the transmission line pressure cable. Cut power from the Throttle Position Sensor, Idle Air Control Motor, Coolant Temperature Sensor at the thermostat housing, Intake Air Temperature Sensor, Oxygen Sensor, Crank Position Sensor, six Fuel Injector Connectors and the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor, then tie them up away from the area. Take off the vacuum lines from the HVAC and Brake Booster at the intake manifold, release the fuel pressure and remove the fuel rail assembly line supply tube. Get rid of both the accessory drive belt and the power steering pump from the intake manifold, then disconnect the exhaust pipes from the engine and lower the vehicle again. Remove the bolts that hold both the intake and exhaust manifolds as well as the manifolds. For new installation, put all the fittings on the new manifold, add a new manifold gasket over the cylinder alignment dowels and install the exhaust/intake manifold. Place the engine exhaust manifolds on the head, bring in fastener Number 3 and tighten it by hand, then set the intake manifold onto the head dowels. After installing Numbers 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11, use washers and fasteners Numbers 6 and 7. Fasteners Numbers 1 through 5 should be tightened to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.), fasteners Numbers 6 and 7 to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) and fasteners Numbers 8 through 11 to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.). Get the power steering pump, accessory drive belt and the fuel system supply line back into their positions before using the fuel pump once more. Link back all the electrical connectors on the intake manifold and restore the vacuum hoses you removed before. After the throttle cable, install any vehicle speed control cable, followed by the transmission line pressure cable (if accessory particulars call for it), then install the air cleaner assembly and air inlet hose to the resonator. Once again rise the chassis to link the exhaust pipes with the engine exhaust and secure all bolts to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.), before dropping the vehicle, reconnecting the battery negative cable and verifying for leaks while the engine runs.
