2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: When servicing or repairing the rack and pinion, start with the front wheels straight ahead and the steering wheel centered. Take the air cleaner housing off, then uncouple and seal the pressure and return lines of the rack and pinion. After that, loosen the column coupler shaft bolt and take out the shaft from the rack and pinion. Separate the left front wheel and tire assembly and later use Puller C-4150A to remove the pitman arm from the rack and pinion. When that's done, take out the windshield washer container and the bolts securing the rack and pinion to the engine compartment to remove the rack and pinion. First, put the rack and pinion onto the rail on the frame and fasten it with bolts, holding it firm by tightening them to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.). Fit back the pitman arm and tighten the nut to a torque of 251 Nm or 185 ft. lbs. After replacing the windshield wiper blade, install the washer reservoir and then put in the wheel and tire assembly. Connect the pressure and return hoses to the rack and pinion and tighten them between 20 - 38 Nm (14 - 28 ft. lbs.), after which you can put the column coupler shaft back. Last, put the air cleaner housing back on and refill the power steering pump.
