2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: First, direct the front wheels straight ahead, center the steering wheel and lock it for rack and pinion servicing and fixing. Remove the air cleaner housing before you drain or siphon the power steering system. Separate the pressure line from the rack and pinion, after which do the same for the return line and a bolt that holds the column to the pinion shaft. Raise the car, then remove the left front wheel and the whole tire assembly. With the Puller C-4150A, remove the Pitman arm from the rack and pinion and pull the windshield washer reservoir and all the bolts from the rack and pinion to get it out of the engine compartment. Set the rack and pinion on the frame rail and attach it with bolts that should be tightened to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.). After fitting the Pitman arm back and tightening the nut to 251 Nm, put in and fasten the windshield washer reservoir, as well as the wheel and tire assembly. After finishing the lowering, join the pressure and vacuum lines to the rack and pinion and secure them at 20-38 Nm (14-28 ft. lbs.). After that, slide on the column coupler shaft and install the air cleaner housing. Lastly, make sure the power steering pump gets filled.
