2000 Jeep Wrangler Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on a 181 FBI Axle on 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
A: For a 181 FBI axle, take out the hub bearing and axle shaft and afterward, take the tie-rod or drag link off the arm of the steering knuckle. The preceding step involves taking off the cotter pins from both ball studs and after, take off both the upper and lower ball stud nuts. Bang the steering knuckle with a brass hammer which will weaken your grip on the ball studs. Refer to the instructions for tools placement before removing and installing upper and lower ball bearings. Place the knuckle on the ball studs, tighten the bottom retaining nut to 80 ft. lbs. (109 Nm) and then insert a new cotter pin. After that, tighten the retaining nut on the chain to 102 Nm (74 ft. lb.) and add another cotter pin. After that, set the hub bearing and axle shaft back in place and link the tie-rod or drag link end to the steering knuckle arm.
