2001 Jeep Wrangler Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before servicing or repairing the steering knuckle, remove the hub bearing and axle shaft since the ball stud procedures require this. To install or remove the upper and lower ball studs, use Tool Kit 6289. Take off the tie-rod or drag link from the steering knuckle arm first, then remove the cotter pins and then the upper and lower ball stud nuts. With tool C-4150A, take out each ball joint from the steering knuckle and remove the knuckle from the ball studs. During installation, attach the steering knuckle to the ball studs and turn the bottom retaining nut to 109 Nm (80 ft. lbs.) torque, along with the use of a new cotter pin. After that, fit the upper retaining nut and turn it until the torque reaches 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.), adding a new cotter pin. In the end, fit the hub bearing and the axle shaft on the hub again and link the end of the tie-rod or drag link to the steering knuckle arm.
