2000 Jeep Wrangler Steering Wheel Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Service the Steering Wheel and Disarm the Airbag System on 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
A: To avoid an accidental air bag deployment and injury, the system must first be disabled before servicing the steering column. Maintain the clock spring in its original position as you remove and install it, to protect it. Place the front wheels straight in front of you and take the negative cable from the battery. Remove the air bag and cable and if your steering column has cruise control, separate the clock spring harness from the cruise switch on the steering wheel. To pull out the steering wheel, attach the bolts on the puller to prevent any damage. Set the steering wheel in place, then tighten the nut to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). With cruise control included, first put back the clock spring harness to the cruise switch wire on the steering wheel, second attach the air bag and finally reconnect the negative battery terminal.
