2000 Jeep Wrangler Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Initiate the Operation of a Power Steering Pump on 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Make sure the engine is not running and check the reservoir with Mopar Power Steering Fluid or a similar product-before or after changing the fluid, don't use gear oil and avoid putting in too much liquid. Wipe the filler cap completely and see if the level on the dipstick shows Cold in the usual temperature conditions. Make sure to fill the reservoir with the suggested fluid and let it stand for two minutes or so. Run the engine for a moment and then turn it off. Once you're done with the first check and the fluid level remains steady after the engine runs for a while, you can stop the process. Get the car onto jack stands and then turn the steering wheel 20 times each way as you make light contact with the stops. Look at the fluid levels and add more if they're low. Set the car lower, turn on the engine and rotate the steering wheel softly, all the way from lock to lock. Turn off the car, look at the fluid level and refill it if needed. Should the fluid be very foamy or milky, just let the vehicle rest for a few minutes before doing the procedure again. Driving a vehicle on foamy fluid for too long can cause damage to the pump.
