2000 Jeep Wrangler Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service a timing cover on 2000 Jeep Wrangler?
A: To work on the timing cover, first take out the negative cable from the battery and take off the accessory drive belt. After that, pull off the accessory drive brackets from the timing case cover, then take out the fan and hub assembly with the fan shroud. If you have these tools, take out the A/C compressor and generator bracket assembly from the engine cylinder head and keep it aside. After that, remove the vibration damper and the bolts connecting the oil pan, timing case cover and cylinder block. Lift off the timing case cover and its gasket and then carefully pry the crankshaft oil seal from the front side of the timing case cover. Before installing, be sure to clean the gasket faces of the timing case cover, oil pan and cylinder block. Replace the crankshaft oil seal in the timing case cover by inserting the open end inside and pushing it in place from the top with the Seal Installation Tool 6139. Gasket the cylinder block, then set the cover plate for the timing case on top of the oil pan gasket and the block. Fit cover alignment and seal installation tool 6139 into the crankshaft seat of the cover. Fit the timing case cover-to-cylinder block and oil pan-to-timing case cover bolts and tighten the 1/4 inch bolts to 7 Nm, the 5/16 inch front cover-to-block bolts to 22 Nm and the oil pan-to-cover bolts to 9.5 Nm. Take out the cover alignment tool, lubricate the vibration damper hub with a bit of oil and then use the sealant along the keyway of the crankshaft. When the key is fitted, put in the vibration damper, washer and bolt, grease them up and tighten the bolt to 108 Nm. First, install the A/C compressor and generator bracket assembly, then the engine fan and hub assembly together with the shroud. After that, fit the accessory drive belt, ensuring it is firmly tightened and hook the negative cable back to the battery.
