2001 Chrysler LHS Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Crankshaft Seal on 2001 Chrysler LHS?
A: You should pull out the transaxle and remove the drive plate before servicing the crankshaft main bearing seal. With a 3/16" flat bladed screwdriver, gently slide in between the dust lip and the metal case close to the seal, move the screwdriver along the metal to pry out the seal, avoiding contact with the crankshaft seal while allowing the screwdriver to touch the edge of the crankshaft (chamfer). Before installing, search for burrs or marks on the chamfer of the crankshaft and use 400 grit sandpaper to smooth out the surface if needed so the seal doesn't get damaged. Then, attach Special Tool 6926-1 Guide to the bottom of the crankshaft, being sure it sits properly as a pilot tool with a magnetic base. Holder the seal above the pilot tool, ensure its lip is lined up with the crankshaft and leave the pilot in place while you join and tighten it. Then, apply Special Tool 6926-2 Installer together with C-4171 Handle to secure the seal in the retainer housing all the way to the housing surface. Lastly, put in the drive plate and the transaxle.
