2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Does a Belt Tensioner Ensure Proper Tension on Power Steering and Air Conditioning Belts on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Having a proper tension on the power steering and air conditioning belts is done by the belt tensioner which is serviceable through its pulley. The tensioner arm must be able to move easily and keep between 33 and 46 lb. of tension on the belt. Before you remove the tensioner, first unhook the power steering/air conditioning belt and get rid of the bolt that holds the tensioner to the engine. When changing the pulley, take out the tensioner pulley. For installation, put in the tensioner pulley and bolt and tighten the bolt up to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Then, set the correctly matched tensioner unit onto the engine and screw it on till you feel 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) of resistance. The next step is to put the power steering/air conditioning belt back into place.
