  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Drive Belt on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A: The first thing to do when servicing or repairing the accessory drive belts is to remove the splash shield. Loosen the tensioner's belt with a wrench as you spin it clockwise and afterward, carefully release the pressure on the tensioner spring and prepare to remove the belt. First, put the belt over everything apart from the power steering pulley, then turn the tensioner clockwise again to install it onto the power steering pulley and let go of the tension spring. Make sure the belt is guided correctly and that it stays tightly against the grooves of the pulley. Check the new belt accurately fits the car after installation by looking at the marks on the belt; the minimum-maximum marks should align and the nominal mark should fit almost perfectly. Before taking off the generator, the power steering pump/air conditioning compressor drive belt should be removed, followed by loosening the pivot bolt and locking nut and adjusting bolt. While installing the generator belt, tilt the adjusting bolt according to the values in the Belt Tension Chart. By mounting Special Tool 8371 on the engine so the Direct Readout Bridge III can measure the belt tension, you can ensure the engine does not run while checking it. Put the tool together, bring the microphone near the belt, pull the belt with your finger and rotate it to find the proper note on the DRB III screen. After that, torque the pivot bolt and locking nut to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and attach the power steering pump and A/C compressor drive belt again.
