2001 Dodge Caravan Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Properly Disassemble and Service a Rear Disc Brake Caliper on 2001 Dodge Caravan?
A: First, clean and check the caliper before you take it apart for service or repairs. Take the caliper off the brake rotor and hang it using a wire hook, so that it can't drip on either the rotor or the car body. Lift off the brake shoes and slide a bit of wood between the piston and the caliper valve. Step gently on the brake pedal to push the piston through its bore, then keep the brake pedal down so that the master cylinder's fluid remains. Loosen the brake fluid flex hose from the caliper assembly and remove it from the car, always using light pressure when you tightly fasten the caliper in a vice to keep the bore from getting damaged. Set the caliper in a vise using jaws, remove the piston dust boot and throw it away and use a soft tool to take out the piston seal from its place. Gently rub alcohol or a suitable solvent into the piston bore and drilled passageways to clean them, wipe dry with a lint-free cloth and examine carefully for scoring or pitting which might clear with a crocus cloth. Always replace the piston seal with a new one and coat it with clean brake fluid before you match it into the caliper's groove. Spray brake fluid in the area and then fit the piston boot over the piston. Make sure the piston is seated in the bore by pushing it on steadily and evenly, so it does not become crooked. With the caliper open, put the piston inside and move it all the way into the caliper bore, past the piston seal. Place the dust boot into the counterbore at the end of the caliper assembly piston bore and use a hammer and Installer, Special Tool C-4689 or C-4842, with Handle, Special Tool C-4171, to press the boot as far into the counterbore as necessary. After that, fit the new caliper onto the vehicle and bleed the brakes if necessary.
