2001 Dodge Caravan Wheel Cylinder Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Wheel Cylinder on 2001 Dodge Caravan?
A: Use a brake pedal depressor to keep the brake pedal pushed down 1 inch past its first position before removing the brake tube from the wheel cylinder. Support the car and take out the wheel and tire. Separate the brake tube from the wheel cylinder at the back and cap both ends. Remove the brake drum and brake shoes from the brake support plate and toss out those that are contaminated. Unscrew the 2 bolts on the wheel cylinder and pull the cylinder from the brake support plate. To install, carefully push gasket sealant or the equivalent around the opening for the wheel cylinder on the brake support plate. Fix the wheel cylinder on the brake support and tighten the fixing bolts up to 8 Nm (75 inch lbs.). Secure the ends of the brake tube to the wheel cylinder and tighten the end nut until you reach 17 Nm (145 inch lbs.) torque. Put the rear brake shoes back on the front plate and then fit the brake drum. After placing the wheel and tire on the lug bolts, use a wrench to tighten the nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Set the drum brake shoes properly, release the brake pedal depressor, bleed the brakes when needed and lastly lower the car.
