2002 Dodge Caravan Wheel Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Wheel Cylinder on 2002 Dodge Caravan?
A: To begin, press the brake pedal down firmly with a depressor, leaving it more than 1 inch from its first resting point, to stop the brake fluid from draining out during disconnection. Lift the vehicle and take out the wheel and tire combination. At the rear of the wheel cylinder, cut away the brake tube and cover the open ends with caps. Remove the brake drum and the brake shoes from the brake support plate and get rid of any that are dirty. With the two bolts gone, remove the wheel cylinder from its position on the brake support plate. Look at the wheel cylinder boots after taking off the brake drums; if you spot any break, leak, cut, hole or cracks, you should inspect and possibly replace the wheel cylinders. If the wheel cylinder is losing fluid and your brake lining is soaked in brake fluid, you should replace the shoes. Around the opening of the wheel cylinder on the brake support plate, add Mopar Gasket-In-A-Tube as part of the installation. Secure the wheel cylinder onto the brake support, then tighten the holding bolts with 8 Nm (75 in. lbs.) torque. Link the brake tube with the wheel cylinder and tighten the tube nut to a torque of 17 Nm (145 in. lbs.). Install the rear brake shoes on the brake support plate and then slide on the brake drum. Fit the wheel and tire back on, tightening all the lug nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Set the shoes on the drums, remove the brake pedal depressor tool, bleed the system if needed and next lower down the car.
