2002 Dodge Dakota Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install an Axle Shaft on 2002 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before you work on the front axle half shaft, lift the vehicle, remove the wheel and tire assembly. Provided you have what you need, start with the skid plate, then remove the cotter pin, nut lock, spring washer from the stub shaft and the hub nut and washer. After that, unbolt the brake caliper and rotor and if there is one, clear away the ABS wheel speed sensor. Loosen the hub bearing bolts and take the hub bearing out of the knuckle. Support the half shaft at its attachment to the C/V joint, then raise two pry bars behind the inner C/V housing to ease the C/V joint off the axle before you remove the half shaft from the car. To install, grease the side of the axle with a little wheel bearing grease, drop the half shaft stub into the steering knuckle and make sure the snap ring slides into the groove of the joint housing. With the bearings removed, scrub the hub bearing bore and the mating surface clean, then apply a small amount of grease to each surface. Put the hub bearing onto the axle half shaft and steering knuckle, fix it in place with the correct bolts and if the car has them, attach the ABS wheel speed sensor again. Subsequently, fit the rotor and the caliper to the hub, push down on the brakes and tighten the nut to 180 ft. lbs. When done, slide on the spring washer, nut lock and cotter pin, add the skid plate if it's fitted and attach the wheel and tire assembly back in place.
