2001 Dodge Dakota Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Tie Rod End on 2001 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before working on the tie rod ends, raise the car, support it and take off the tire and wheel assembly. First, take off the outer tie rod end and then disconnect the inner tie rod end from the rack and pinion. When unfastening the outer tie rod end, never twist the boot; loosen the jam nut, take off the outer nut at the steering knuckle and use Remover MB-991113 to separate the ball stud from the knuckle before removing the outer tie rod end from the inner one. For the inner tie rod end, thread it in the rack and pinion, tighten to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.) and then install the outer tie rod end and the tire and wheel assembly. With the vehicle at a lower height, set the vehicle's wheel toe pattern. Make sure the boot is not twisted before repeating these steps on the outer tie rod end, but this time easy the boot onto the inner link, mount the outer one into the steering knuckle and tighten the ball stud nut to 55 Nm (65 ft. lbs.), then tighten the jam nut to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.), finally set the wheel toe pattern.
