Q: How is the Crankshaft Seal Installed in Relation to the Rear Main Bearing Cap on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: The service seal is made from two Viton parts, with the top part installable on the crankshaft with or without it, whereas the bottom part must be fitted only when the main bearing cap is out of the engine. With the crankshaft not in place, start by removing the crankshaft and throwing out the old upper seal. After putting in the crankshaft, take off the oil pan, oil pump and rear main bearing cap, throw away the old lower oil seal and remove the old upper oil seal very carefully. When the rear cap is installed, clear and clean the cylinder block surface to prevent debris in the groove and look for any burrs at the oil hole. Apply a small amount of oil to the new upper seal lips, set the new upper rear bearing oil seal with the white paint at the rear and guide the crankshaft into place in the cylinder block. Lightly coat the new lower seal lips with oil and secure the new lower rear bearing oil seal in the bearing cap so the white face is towards the rear. Apply a 5 mm drop of Mopar Gasket Maker to each side of the rear main bearing cap, assemble it on the cylinder block immediately, line it up with the guide pin and marking hole and tighten the bolts no more than twice. Wash and oil all the cap bolts, secure all of the main bearing caps and tighten each one twice, first to 115 Nm and then another 115 Nm. Mount the pump and then spread Mopar GEN II Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant on the inside of the bearing cap, spreading it all the way to the block. Allow some small excess to come out and then wipe any extra off the oil pan seal groove, then quickly set the oil pan in place. For the lower seal, treat the rear surfaces of the main cap mating face with solvent, insert a new upper seal, put a little oil on the lower seal lips and install the seal in the bearing cap with white paint toward the rear. Spread a coating of Mopar Gasket Maker on each side of the rear main bearing cap, quickly attach it to the cylinder block after you finish coating, align the cap and put the rear main bearing cap into place with cleaned and oiled bolts, alternating the tightening to 115 Nm torque. After that, attach the oil pump, put Mopar GEN II Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant on the bearing cap-to-block bond and install the oil pan right away.
