2001 Dodge Durango Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an Oil Pan on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: To work with the oil pan, first turn off the negative battery cable and remove the engine oil dipstick. In the case of 2WD, jack up the vehicle, let out the oil and take off the engine mount insulator bolts. Place a block of wood between the jack and oil pan, lift the engine, place the mount through bolts at each engine mount point on the frame brackets and lower the engine so the mounts rest on the replacement bolts. Remove the oil pan in addition to the one-piece gasket. Remove the negative cable and take off the dipstick to start for 4WD. Then, raise the vehicle, drain the engine oil and remove the front driving axle, replace engine mount support brackets and transmission inspection cover. Carefully clean and remove any excess sealant from the rear main cap oil pan gasket groove, making sure not to upend the seal inside the slots. Wash the oil pan and screen with solvent and ensure that the screen is thorough clean. Look at the oil drain plug to ensure there is no damage, then look at the plug hole for any signs of damage as well. Inspect the mounting flange on the oil pan for any bends or twist. For installation in a 2WD, insert four alignment dowels made with 5/16 x 1 1/2 inch bolts, secure them in the cylinder block and use a little Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant in the corner between the cap and the cylinder block. Lay the one-piece gasket over the dowels, fit the oil pan over it, bolt the oil pan using the bolts and tighten them to 24 Nm (215 in. lbs.). Get rid of the dowels, fit the other bolts and tighten them all to the same level as before. Place the drain plug into the pan and tighten it to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.), then use the oil pan to lift the engine and take out the temporary bolts on the frame brackets. Using bolts, set the mount insulator in place and firm it by turning them to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Low the vehicle, attach the distributor cap, add back the dipstick, reconnect the negative cable and pour oil into the bottom of the engine until the right level is reached. For 4WD, build the dowels in the same way, set them in place, add sealant, lower the gasket and oil pan and tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. Once the drain plug is in place, add the transmission inspection cover, the engine mount support brackets and insulators and place the front driving axle. To finish, lower the car, attach the distributor cap, add the dipstick, reconnect the battery's negative wire and get the oil level in the crankcase just right.
