2001 Dodge Durango Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Properly Install a Piston Ring Set on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: Use an inverted piston to check the bottom of the cylinder bore for the end gaps and then measure the 2 in. gap above the piston ring to fit it. Put a feeler gauge in the gaps; they should measure 0.254 - 0.508 mm (0.010 - 0.020 inch) for the top compression ring, 0.508 - 0.762 mm (0.020 - 0.030 inch) for the second compression ring and 0.254 - 1.270 mm (0.010 - 0.050 inch) for the oil ring. Whenever a ring has small gaps, it can be filed so they are correct, but those with wide gaps can't be used. Don't damage the piston with sharp instruments when installing the rings and first insert the oil rail spacer, then the side rings as described in the package instructions. Install the second compression rings by using Installation Tool C-4184, placing the side with the identification mark up and the chamfer pointed down. Make sure the ring part of the top compression ring faces upwards and that its identification mark is also facing up, by using a ring installer. Measure the side distance between the piston ring and ring groove; it should be 0.074 - 0.097 mm (0.0029 - 0.0038 inch) for compression rings and not go beyond 0.246 mm (0.0097 inch) for the steel rail oil ring. Put pistons in with insufficient or very large side clearance. Now, set the top compression ring 90° counterclockwise of the gap between the oil ring rails and place the second compression ring 90° clockwise from the gap.
