2001 Dodge Neon Muffler Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Muffler on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: You should not touch the muffler until the exhaust system has cooled down, since it reaches very high temperatures next to the catalytic converter. Jack up the vehicle and spray penetrating lubricant at the band clamp fastener of the component coming off, but never use petroleum-based products with muffler or pipe isolators; instead, use liquid soap mixed with water. Loosen the strap attached to the muffler, free the band clamp and take off the muffler's isolation system before you remove it from the exhaust pipe. Make sure the edges and connections of both pipes and the muffler are clean so pieces mate smoothly, throwing away any worn or damaged isolators, rusted or worn-out clamps, supports and connecting parts. Whenever you replace an exhaust system component, go for original or equivalent parts. While preparing for installation, do not tighten the clamps until everything is lined up and you have confirmed the clearances are correct. Put the muffler onto the intermediate pipe and connect the isolator supports to the car's underbody, ensuring everything is properly aligned from the front to clear the area below. Fasten all band clamps to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) so the parts do not touch at the center and stretch and weaken the jaws. To change the band clamp, undo the nut and carefully peel the ends of the old clamp back until the weld is broken, being sure to put on the new clamp in the original orientation. After you're done, attach the exhaust system ground strap.
