2001 Dodge Neon Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Catalytic Converter on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: Catalytic converters must be serviced or repaired after their exhaust system has completely cooled, since they run at a high temperature. First, take out the muffler and exhaust pipe and then detach the downstream oxygen sensor's electrical connector. If you have NLEV vehicles, take out the exhaust manifold support bracket. Attach a pipe or clamp to the converter, then remove the mounting screws and toss out the flange gasket. During an inspection of the catalytic converter, note any flow problems and see the material inside by using a borescope or flashlight after you have carefully removed the oxygen sensors. Should a repair be required, first check the air, fuel and ignition system because these are often the leading causes of problems. For installation, join the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold with a new flange gasket and for NLEV cars, mount the exhaust manifold support bracket, tightening the M10 bolt to 54 Nm, M12 bolt to 95 Nm and nut to 28 Nm. Screw the bolt through the manifold support bracket and heat shield, applying 28 Nm of torque. Attach the muffler and exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter, fix the support isolators onto the underbody and fasten the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold at 28 Nm. Attach everything from the front in order to fit with underbody objects and secure every slip joint band clamp to 47 Nm. Don't tighten exhaust band clamps too much so that the clamping force won't be lost. After that, if you need to, replace the process oxygen with the downstream sensor and connect its wiring.
