2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: What Steps Should Be Taken After an Air Bag Deployment on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Once deployed, an air bag in any vehicle cannot be used again, so the air bag, the driver air bag covering, the Clock Spring and the steering column assembly must be replaced. Only replace other vehicle parts when they appear broken or damaged. When the air bags have deployed, the vehicle interior will have some harmless powder from the pyrotechnics and trace amounts of sodium hydroxide powder that could irritate your skin, eyes, nose or throat. As a result, wearing safety glasses, rubber gloves and a long-sleeved shirt is necessary while cleanup continues. Should you experience any irritation, cool water is recommended on skin and you should get outside for fresh air on nose or throat, until irritation stops; but if it persists, medical advice should be sought. Open the hood, pop each air bag out and add them to the pile of scrap parts from the vehicle. Clean any remaining powder from the car by using a vacuum outside of the vehicle and work your way inside to prevent dusting or sitting in areas you haven't yet cleaned, paying attention to the heater and air conditioner vents as well. Use the lowest speed on both the heater and air conditioning blower to vacuum any powder you find and running a second vacuuming can help recover any missed deposits on the inside.
