2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Passenger Air Bag on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: When you're changing a faulty or damaged passenger air bag, start by isolating the battery negative cable and wait two minutes for the capacitor to discharge afterward. Take out the lower surround piece from the instrument panel, then unscrew the same two screws that hold the two panel outlet housings to the upper glove box opening reinforcement. Release the lower and inboard passenger air bag door flanges by taking out the six screws attaching them to the instrument panel. Work on both brackets by removing the screws securing the air bag to the upper glove box opening and the other two screws from the front bracket fastened to the instrument panel. To safely release the seven snap features, gently prise the edges of the passenger air bag door apart from the instrument panel using a suitable tool. Reach into the cabin and pull the whole passenger air bag housing and door unit straight back from the main instrument panel to get to the connector for the air bag inflator. Pull out the passenger air bag and the air bag door as a single attachment from the instrument panel. Set the passenger air bag and air bag door against the instrument panel, reinsert the wire harness connector until the latches snap and then press on each of the seven snap features to lock them. With the instrument panel off, set the two screws for the passenger air bag front brackets into the instrument panel support and tighten them to 6 Nm and repeat with the two screws for the rear brackets to the glove box opening reinforcement. After that, install and tighten the six screws in the passenger air bag door's inboard and lower flanges to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs. and 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.) for the two screws in the mounting tabs of the panel outlet housings. After that, install the lower air bag surround onto the instrument panel, but make sure the negative battery cable remains unconnected until after you complete the supplemental restraint system verification test.
