2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Crankshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Crankshaft on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: The crankshaft should be serviced by first removing the oil pan and the oil pump from the rear main bearing cap. Lift off each bearing cap and bearing separately and finally slide the crankshaft out of the block. Get rid of the rear crankshaft oil seals and the front crankshaft oil seal as well. Slide a little bit of engine oil gently onto the new upper seal lips before pushing the white side-with the white paint facing the back-onto the rear engine bearing. Set the crankshaft where it belongs in the cylinder block, then apply just enough oil to the new lower bearings and place the seal into place with the white painting side facing towards the rear of the block. Apply just 5 mm (0.20 in.) drop of Loctite 518 or a suitable substitute, on the outer portion of each rear main bearing cap and quickly fit the bearing cap to the cylinder block after sealant application, without touching the rubber seal. Use the slots and dowel on the cap, with cap bolts to line the cap properly; try not to remove too much material after assembly and strike the rear cap only twice for best results. Clean and lather all cap bolts, then set all main bearing caps and fasten them, alternating between opposite sides and using 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs. ) of torque for all the bolts. Put the oil pump back in place and spread Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or a similar sealant, over the bearing cap area where it joins the block. Squeeze out a small amount and remove any extra sealant from the oil pan seal groove. The next step is to install the new front crankshaft oil seal, put on the oil pan and then add the new rear oil seal.
